WASHINGTON D.C. – Community Justice proudly announces the return of its former Executive Director Greg Jackson to the organization as Executive Advisor, bringing with him extensive leadership and strategic expertise gained during his recent tenure as Deputy Director of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention (OGVP). Jackson’s tenure was instrumental in advancing historic investments in Community Violence Intervention (CVI) work, crafting a multi-agency response to support communities after incidents of mass gun violence, creating the Safer States Agenda—a roadmap for states to bolster their public safety infrastructure and strengthen gun laws, and hastening implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
“We are entering a critical phase in the movement to end gun violence, and having Greg back at Community Justice is a game-changer. His leadership at the federal level transformed how policymakers engage with community-based solutions. His return strengthens our ability to ensure those closest to the pain of gun violence are also closest to the power shaping solutions,” said José Alfaro, Executive Director. “Greg’s leadership has already saved countless lives, and having him back on our team ensures we continue to build on the foundation laid by the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Together we will push for critical federal support that leads to real, tangible change on the ground—strengthening community-led efforts and amplifying the voices of those most affected by violence.”
During his tenure as Executive Director of Community Justice, Jackson spearheaded key initiatives that helped build the organization’s national profile, including the establishment of Invest in Us, the only national coalition dedicated solely to federal funding for CVI programs. His leadership was instrumental in achieving bipartisan passage of the Break the Cycle of Violence Act through the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022, legislation that would allocate $5 billion for community-led interventions and $1.5 billion for youth employment opportunities in communities most impacted by violence.
“Community Justice has always been at the forefront of transformative change, and I’m honored to return to an organization that remains a driving force in this movement,” said Greg Jackson, Executive Advisor. “From my neighborhood to the White House, I’ve seen that centering solutions focused on those most impacted is the key to ending gun violence . Community Justice has been an avid voice in ensuring that Black and Brown communities that have been disproportionately impacted by violence are centered in the fight against gun violence and that policy solutions at all levels focused on the people suffering most by this crisis. As Executive Advisor, I’m excited to support this critical organization and the outstanding leadership of Jose, Adzi and the entire Community Justice team.”
Jackson’s distinguished career includes serving as National Field Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Co-Chair of DC for Obama, and Director of Community Relations and Services under Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. His advocacy work began after surviving a near-fatal shooting in 2013, a personal experience that inspired him to dedicate his life to ending gun violence and mentoring youth in underserved communities.
With Jackson as Executive Advisor, Community Justice will continue driving national conversations and legislative advancements centered on community empowerment, racial equity, and life-saving violence intervention strategies.
