Statement from Community Justice on Supreme Court Decision Upholding Ban on Those Subject Order from Owning Guns

Washington, D.C. – Following the Supreme Court’s 8-1 Decision to prohibit individuals subject to a protective order restraining order from possessing a firearm, Community Justice Founder Amber Goodwin released the following statement: 

“The Supreme Court's decision to uphold the Federal law, banning people under protective order from owning a firearm, reaffirms the rights of domestic violence survivors to live free from fear and harm. Today’s victory is a testament to the relentless advocacy of survivors and the decision sends a powerful message that having a gun does not provide a license for dangerous individuals to inflict further terror.

 “Gun-related intimate partner violence remains a devastating crisis in America. An average of 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner each month, and the presence of a gun makes it five times more likely that domestic violence will lead to a fatal outcome. 

“We remain committed to advocating for the protection of all survivors of domestic violence and ensuring that extremist efforts to undermine these essential laws are held at bay. Our work continues to ensure that common-sense measures like these protect women and families for generations to come."
