Community Justice Releases Statement Following Murder of Sonya Massey

Washington, D.C. – In response to the death of Sonya Massey at the hands of the Sangamon County Sheriff's deputy, Community Justice Executive Director José Alfaro released the following statement:

“Sonya Massey should be alive today. Her death is the latest example of the fear many Black and brown people carry with them every day—the fear that an ordinary interaction, a call for help, a run in your neighborhood, or a trip to the store will turn deadly. 

“Sonya’s death reflects the blatant disregard people hold for Black lives, especially the lives of Black women. Black and brown communities disproportionately experience gun violence but are continuously seen as criminals and perpetrators of violence rather than victims. She called 911 for help and was instead met with violence, aggression, and a complete lack of empathy. 

“Community Justice remains focused on ending gun violence in our communities—including gun violence perpetrated by law enforcement—and advocating for policies, resources, and proven community-driven solutions to improve public safety and save lives. Our hearts are with Sonya’s family and community, who have had their lives permanently altered and must deal with the resulting trauma for years to come.”
