Washington, D.C. – In response to the fatal police shooting of 26-year-old Justin Robinson on September 1 in Southeast Washington, D.C., Community Justice Executive Director, José Alfaro, released the following statement:
“Community Justice extends our deepest condolences to the Robinson family as they grieve the loss of a beloved brother, son, and community leader. The release of body camera footage has further raised serious questions about the tactics used by officers during this encounter, adding to the deep frustration and heartbreak felt by the Robinson family and the D.C. community.
Justin Robinson, a known violence interrupter with Cure the Streets, was a dedicated advocate for peace in his community, a role he embraced with passion and commitment. His murder stands in stark contrast to the life of service he led, and it leaves a painful void for those who knew and loved him.
The fact that Justin was a community activist and violence interrupter only deepens the injustice of this tragic loss. His life and his work were devoted to preventing the very kind of violence that took him from his family.
As the investigation unfolds, we stand with the Robinson family in their pursuit of justice. This is not just about one incident—it is about the systemic issues that allow Black lives to be disproportionately endangered by the systems meant to protect them. Community Justice will continue to advocate for comprehensive police reform and the adoption of community-centered public safety strategies that prioritize de-escalation, mental health support, and accountability.
Our hearts are with the Robinson family and the Southeast D.C. community as they navigate this profound loss. We remain committed to fighting for a future where tragedies like this one are no longer part of our reality.”
