Washington, D.C. – Community Justice is proud to announce that we have been honored with the 2024 Founders Award from Cities United for our role as a national partner organization on the Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Action Plan report. This prestigious award was presented during Cities United’s 11th Annual Convening and recognizes the critical work we have undertaken to create a community-led vision for addressing gun violence in Black and brown communities across the nation.

The CVI Action Plan was a groundbreaking initiative that brought together stakeholders from across the CVI ecosystem to save lives, reduce violence in Black and brown communities, and uplift the voices of those committed to this cause. For the first time, leaders from every corner of the field came together to set ambitious goals and refine essential strategies that will guide philanthropic and public investments for years to come.

Community Justice, along with key partners including the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI), The National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR), the Community-based Public Safety Collective (CBPS Collective), and the Urban Peace Institute, played a crucial role in coordinating this report and shaping the future of community-led violence intervention.

“This award is a powerful recognition of the collaborative work we’ve done to uplift the CVI field and build a comprehensive, action-driven plan to end violence in our communities,” said José Alfaro, Executive Director of Community Justice.

“The CVI Action Plan is more than just a report—it’s a framework for long-term, sustainable change in how we approach public safety. We are proud to have worked on this national effort alongside our partners, The HAVI, NICJR, Urban Peace Institute, and CBPS Collective, and  are deeply committed to continuing our work to save lives, support survivors, and invest in solutions that center the needs of Black and brown communities.”

The CVI Action Plan is designed to catalyze investment and drive systemic change for years to come, and Community Justice remains dedicated to pushing these efforts forward. We are incredibly grateful to Cities United for this recognition and look forward to the continued work that lies ahead.
