Birmingham, AL – In response to the weekend’s mass shooting at a popular bar in Birmingham’s Five Points South district, where four people were killed and more than a dozen others were injured, Community Justice’s Executive Director José Alfaro released the following statement:

“This horrific act of violence is yet another reminder of the ongoing gun crisis affecting our communities. The loss of life and the trauma that survivors and their families now face is heartbreaking.  Our thoughts are with the Birmingham community during this difficult time.

The fact that this attack may have been targeted shows how serious this public health crisis has become. We simply cannot allow the easy access to guns in our cities to keep fueling violence that destroys lives and neighborhoods every day.

Community Justice remains fully committed to fighting gun violence and advocating for policysolutions that put the safety and health of our communities first. We urge leaders at every level to  increase community violence intervention (CVI) funding and victim support services  for our communities, and to tackle the root causes that lead to violence.

As Birmingham starts to heal, we stand with the victims, their families, and everyone affected. We will keep fighting for a future where these tragedies are no longer a part of everyday life, and where our communities can finally be free from gun violence.”
